If you are wondering how long does the IVF process take, an average cycle lasts six to eight weeks from consultation to embryo transfer. However, the timeline includes pre-testing, ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, embryo development, and transfer. Yet, the recovery varies, and factors like ovarian response, hormone levels, or genetic testing may extend the process, but expert care improves success.

How long does the IVF process take?

Having difficulty conceiving and planning for IVF? Want to know about the process of the same?

A woman's egg and a man's sperm are combined in a lab during in vitro fertilization (IVF). "Outside the body" (in vitro) is what it signifies. The sperm adheres to and penetrates the egg during fertilization.

However, knowing how long does the IVF process takes is important to make an informed decision. In this article, you will learn about all the major aspects of the IVF process, how long does the IVF process takes, and other factors as well.

What is In Vitro Fertilization IVF?

IVF, or in vitro fertilization, is a medical treatment that uses assisted reproductive technology (ART) to fertilize an egg outside of the body in a lab rather than inside. Additionally, this technique involves stimulating the ovaries, removing the eggs, fertilizing them with sperm, and then transferring one or more of the resulting embryos into the woman's uterus. IVF is an effective treatment for infertility and genetic issues, but it comes with a high emotional, financial, and physical cost.

Everybody's IVF experience is different, but on average, an IVF cycle lasts six to eight weeks from consultation to embryo transfer.

  • Timeline for the IVF Process Step-by-Step:

• One to two weeks for consultation and pre-testing:   A review of your medical history, an initial consultation, and any tests required to determine your reproductive status. Hormonal injections are used to encourage the ovaries to generate more eggs (8–12 days).

  • Egg retrieval (1 day):

• Development of the embryo and fertilization (three to five days): The sperm and collected eggs are fertilized in a laboratory, and the development of the embryos is tracked. However, the best-developed embryo is selected and put into the uterus during a one-day embryo transfer.

Steps in the IVF process

  • The first stage: oral contraceptives
It may sound contradictory, but before starting their reproductive medicine regimen, IVF patients must take oral contraceptives (birth control) for 10–14 days.
Studies have demonstrated that oral contraceptives, when used before ovarian stimulation, can enhance the quantity of eggs available for retrieval, guarantee that follicles develop as a cohesive unit, and promote ovarian health during IVF.
  • The second stage: Stimulation of the Ovaries
Following the completion of an oral contraceptive course, you will start receiving injections of fertility medicine for about nine to eleven days. The hormones that are naturally present in these drugs aid in the growth and maturation of your follicles, which house your eggs.
How many mature eggs are available for retrieval depends on the size and quantity of follicles.  At this point in the IVF process, you should anticipate going to your fertility clinic around every other day for a transvaginal ultrasound and blood work monitoring, which is frequently called morning monitoring.
  • The third stage: Recovery of the Egg
A same-day procedure known as "egg retrieval" involves removing the eggs from the ovarian follicles and carefully transferring them to the IVF lab team so they can fertilize and start dividing.
A qualified anesthesiologist will oversee your retrieval to make sure you are comfortable throughout.
  • The fourth stage: Transfer of the Embryo
On the fifth day, an embryo that has been closely watched in the IVF lab will be returned to the uterus.  (Day 0 is the egg retrieval day.)  We call this a "fresh" transfer.  It is safe to cryopreserve your embryos until you are prepared for a "frozen" embryo transfer (FET) if you must wait for whatever reason.

Additionally, embryo transfer is a one-day process that should last 20 to 30 minutes.  During this painless treatment, you will remain awake and won't need an anesthetic.

There is a waiting period after this to see if the embryo implants in the uterus, which usually lasts 9–10 days, depending on how mature the embryo was at transfer.

What Could Prolong the Duration of your IVF cycle?

what could prolong the duration of ivf cycle

You've put in a lot of effort to get to this stage, so any setbacks might be really annoying.  It's natural to want to know how long the IVF process takes, or if it's taking longer than anticipated.

The three most typical explanations are as follows:

  • Inadequate Ovarian Reaction
Your IVF cycle may be delayed or terminated if the body doesn't react to the drugs as intended.  For instance, if fewer follicles form in the ovaries than anticipated, indicating fewer eggs were generated, there may be a delay or cancellation.
  • Hormone Levels That Are Not Ideal
There are situations when hormone levels are not optimal for completing an IVF cycle, and postponing may actually increase your chances of success in the subsequent cycle.
Although hearing this news can be upsetting, keep in mind that each cycle serves both a therapeutic and a diagnostic purpose.  During each cycle, your fertility specialist will learn vital information about your body and how it reacts to medicine, improving your chances of a successful next cycle.
  • Monitoring of embryos
If you choose to have your embryos tested genetically before transfer, this could also cause your IVF cycle to take longer than anticipated.  Process time may increase by four to five weeks.
Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) can provide the most assurance that a child will be genetically healthy, especially if couples are known carriers or at a higher risk of genetic disease transmission.
We are aware that delays can be difficult and distressing for any number of reasons.  Your physician will thoroughly examine your case and make any required modifications in the event of a postponement or cancellation, offering assistance and information at every stage.

IVF injection types include:

  • Gonadotropins: For ovulation stimulation.
  • GnRH antagonists: To stop ovulation from occurring too soon.
  • Ovulation is triggered by HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin).

IVF Success Rate Influencing Factors:

  • How old is the woman
  • Standard of the sperm and eggs
  • The state of the uterus
  • Competency and knowledge of the fertility clinic
