What is ORTHOPAEDICS

Orthopaedics is the speciality medical branch which deals with the study, diagnosis and treatment of the skeletomuscular system. This includes structures like joints, bones and in some cases, muscles.

Common Orthopaedic Disorders:

  • Arthritis: The medical condition of swelling of the joint(s) is known as Arthritis. It is mainly diagnosed in old aged people. It causes pain and stiffness in the joints.

  • Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursae (small fluid-filled pads under the joints) is called Bursitis. It causes immense pain, stiffness and swelling. Bursitis mainly develops in the shoulders, elbows and hips.

  • Soft-Tissue Injury: STIs mainly occur in the tendons, muscles and ligaments. These can be caused by a sprain, muscle strain, sports injury etc.

  • Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis is a medical condition in which the bones of the body become extremely fragile, weak and brittle. Activities as basic as bending over and cracking knuckles can cause a fracture.

Severe back pain can be caused by wrong posture, lifting heavy objects, injuries and old age. Back pain can seem like a trivial disorder, but it can cause immense pain and might even need surgery to get relief.

Orthopaedic Medicine:

Orthopaedic medicine is the non-surgical branch of orthopaedics. In this branch, doctors and medical professionals aim at treating disorders related to the skeletomuscular system through medicines and other non-surgical methods.

Orthopaedic Surgery:

Many diseases and disorders related to the bones and muscles require surgery for instant and lasting relief. Orthopaedic surgery is the branch which operates on these cases. This can involve surgery of the spinal cord, bones, joints and muscles.

Some common orthopaedic surgeries are:

  • Knee Replacement Surgery: When a knee is partially or damaged by injuries, accidents, obesity or old age, it can require surgery. In a KRS, the affected areas or the entire knee joint (in some cases) are substituted by metal parts.

  • Ankle Repair: Ankle Repair surgery is performed usually after the ankle joint gets unsteady or imbalanced after an injury. The bones are set in the right position through surgery and held in place with a cast.

  • Spinal Surgeries: The spinal cord can get affected due to various reasons like accidents, continuous wrong posture, nerve disbalances etc. Spinal surgeries provide a fast and lasting solution in most cases.
